What Is a Diesel Generator

A diesel generator set, commonly referred to as a diesel genset, is a combination of a diesel engine and an electric generator (alternator) used to generate electrical energy. 
 
It serves as a primary or backup power source in residential, commercial, industrial, and remote applications where grid electricity is unavailable, unreliable, or insufficient.

Main components

A diesel generator set is a self-contained power generation system that converts mechanical energy—produced by the combustion of diesel fuel in a compression-ignition internal combustion engine—into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction in an alternator. The complete unit typically includes:
 
  A diesel engine (prime power) with a fuel system, a cooling and exhaust system and a lubrication system
 A radiator to cooling the engine, filled with cooling water
 An alternator (AC generator)
 A control panel including control module, usually also with a battery charger
 A main assembly frame or skid, usually as a base fuel tank

How to Choose the Right Diesel Generator

Load Calculation Method

Load Calculation Method

Calculate the total based on the maximum power required for the operation of the equipment. If it is a device with an electric motor, the start-up sequence of the equipment and the maximum power (current) required during start-up need to be calculated.

Diesel generator sets generally have the best fuel consumption and optimal equipment performance when the load is around 75%. So we usually calculate the total load and then divide it by 0.75 to finally obtain the main power of the diesel generator set we need.

Prime Power vs Standby Power

PRIME POWER RATING is appliceble for supplying electric power in lieu of commercially purchased power. Prime Power applications must be in the form of one of the following two categories:
  • UNLIMITED TIME RUNNING PRIME POWER
  • LIMITED TIME RUNNING PRIME POWER
STANDBY POWER RATING is applicable for supplying emergency power for the duration of the utility power outage. No overload capability is available for this rating. Under no condition is an engine allowed to operate in parallel with the public utility at he Standby Power rating
